Sparks explode from the bonnet of a New York City taxi cab as it catches fire on the lower level of the 59th Street Bridge. The accident happen during morning rush hour causing the lower portion of the bridge to be closed.

Mars Rover Snaps Stunning Self-Portrait
NASA put together this artsy image of Mars rover Opportunity getting a glimpse of its own shadow on the rim of Endeavour Crater. The robotic geologist used its panoramic camera to take about a dozen shots using an assortment of filters between about 4:30 and 5 p.m. Mars time on March 9.
The images were transmitted back to Earth where a team of scientists assembled them into this mosaic, which was released Wednesday.

Anthony Shadid, Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign correspondent for the New York Times, has died of an asthma attack while on assignment in Syria. Shadid was an incredible journalistic talent. 
The Times executive editor Jill Abramson has said in a statement:

Anthony died as he lived — determined to bear witness to the transformation sweeping the Middle East and to testify to the suffering of people caught between government oppression and opposition forces.
